Blues Guitar in Ragtime Style - Blind Blake's Guitar Chimes
Guitar Chimes Ragtime Blues Guitar Lesson
Guitar Chimes is a Blake piece that features almost all of his techniques, except for harmonics. The complete lesson video is 37 mins long and includes a tab file for printing out.
It contains his trademark double thumb strokes and also the single string runs we've come to know and love. Although Blake is best known for his fast ragtime songs, Chimes is quite slow, which can lull us into the false impression that's it's easy to play.
The fingering in fact isn't that difficult to get our heads around, but something else struck me while learning to play this song. All the way through it almost never repeats itself, which make it tough to get down. It's the variations and the surprising turns that make this piece a treat to play.
The biggest challenge is to get used to the idea that, although it's base around the standard thumb alternating pattern, the thumb can break out of it any time and move over to the trebles. The single string runs are mostly done with the finger and thumb working alternately - you have to be accurate.
It always strikes me that Blake was constantly looking for ways to keep ahead of the other guys. In the video below, I play a version of his West Coast Blues.
Keep on Pickin' - most of all have fun,
